I don't have a one-size-fits-all standard program for premarital therapy
because every couple is unique and many have already identified specific issues
they know they need to address. Then the therapy is pretty much like marital
therapy. I usually see the individuals together for most sessions, including
when discussing individual, past experience, family of origin legacies as I
want each person to get to know each other on a deeper, experiential level and
understand better how to relate to their unique partner. But, in general, I
also think it's important for couples to talk out and agree on exactly what
kind of marriage they're wanting and just what is their commitment, or promise
to action, to create and sustain that marriage, especially when things get
tough.
