In my experience in working with many couples who have been married for long periods of time and who are experiencing considerable stress, I have often wondered if these couples were more prepared for the marriage relationship and all that it entails, would they would be sitting in my office contemplating separation or divorce? They say "prevention is worth a pound of cure." The immense pain that couples face after years of marriage has caused me to want to help them avoid as many problems as they can. Pre-marital counseling, examining each other's expectations for their marriage, and helping them to talk openly about these is the best way to help couples get started off "on the right foot."
