The most important part of pre-marital counseling is to get to know each other better especially to identify communication styles of each partner, and pinpoint any potential problem areas. I find it extremely useful to collaborate with the couple in creating a genogram (family tree) where we look at the extended family of both couples emphasizing communication patterns, personalities, family cutoffs and family allegiances. Identifying each person's role in their family of orgin helps to understand and appreciate differences and goes a long way in depersonalizing conflicts.
