I have a great deal of experience a premarital educator, as well as someone who prepares couples to marry. To be more specific, I am currently project manager which is charged to developing a premarital education program for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. This program is Christian based and will be attended by single-church couples as well as intermarried couples. In addition, I have been a pastor for 30 years and a marriage and family therapist for 15 years. During this time, I have had occasion to prepare hundreds of couples for marriage. These days, I tend to use FOCUS, which is a faith based questionnaire, along with numerous materials that I have developed myself to facilitate this process. Depending on a couple’s needs, most engaged couples who consider enlisting me to help them in their efforts to prepare for marriage can expect to spend around 3 – 5 sessions with me. During these sessions I will encourage partners to examine their strengths and weaknesses in an honest, upbeat, friendly and respectful manner. Couples will be asked to look at how they differ and are similar on potential problem areas such as the following few:  communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, finances, personal time, sex, in-laws, recreation, and personality differences. At times, I will assume the role of educator, and at other times I will function as a therapist. If couples have a Christian background, and they are receptive to exploring this domain in greater detail, I can incorporate a faith based component into this process that helps them discern how religion and spirituality can have a positive impact on marital and family well-being.
